Firth of Clyde 24-26 August
Transportation
This is left up to individuals/crews/boats to arrange. It is a four hour drive to Largs. Best way is to drive Dundee > Perth > Stirling and cross through Glasgow if you're outside rush hours or go around it. Largs Marina is just south of Largs itself, can't miss it. We're all meeting in the club house for drinks on arrival. Your boat will only be available from 1900. For details of the Largs Marina location follow 'Marinas' under 'Useful Links' from the 'Main Menu'
Food
Included in the trip is breakfast on the Saturday morning and dinner on Saturday night. The rest is required to be arranged by the individual skippers/crews, for Lunches on Sat and Sun, breakfast on Sunday morning and some snacks for underway. Remember to bring plenty of water. Soups and warm drinks are a good idea during the day in case of a cold weekend. Go to 'Ship's Biscuits' from the main menu for catering ideas.
On the Friday night we'll leave it up to the teams to arrange something. Nardini's restaurant and bar (01475 6866840) in Largs is always good and worth pre-booking. If you arrive late get a snack on the way or ask for a table right away at the Nardini's. They stop serving food after 21.00 hours.
Breakfast will be at 0730 but in two places on the Saturday morning by boats (named as per skipper)
Nardini's: (Alan, Andrew, Bowring, Brian, Janwillem, John C, John T, Jonathan)
Largs Sailing Club: (David, Hans, Klaas, Martin, Mike, Robin, Steve).
On Saturday evening the Buffet is at 19:30 at the Chartroom, Kip Marina.
Clothing
3 things to remember Space, Warmth, and a change of clothing. The West coast of Scotland can be a wet, cold, and windy place at the end of the summer (but then again bring swimming gear and suntan cream cos it may not be!). Either way bring plenty of warm clothing.
This should include waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, and a woolen hat. Some clothes may get absolutely soaked so you should bring spares. The other important thing to remember is to wear soft soled shoes which will not mark the decks of the boats. Stowage space will be limited, so pack your clothes in soft bags (not suitcases) to make it easier to cram them into odd nooks and crannies. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag. If you do not have a sleeping bag then either bring blankets or an old quilt/duvet. Pillows are also worthwhile bringing.
Wet gear hire - Sailing Gear can be hired from the Sunsail. However, they do not provide boots. If the weather is looking good or moderate rain then typical hiking gear will be sufficient. Skippers should find out from their crew who may need gear and then arrange this directly with Sunsail. This must be done through your skipper on the Sunsail booking form - remember it will be too late to arrange when you get down there on Friday evening.
Money
Each boat crew is responsible for dividing up the cost of food and drink, and of any diesel the boat uses. If there are any breakages then you must tell the skipper. Damage or losses will be divided amongst the crew (eg: winch handles are expensive by the way, and do not float!!).
Event costs are £125 each.
The deadline for final payments is past so all payments should be in by now. If you are not paid up then your space will be allocated to the waiting list.. No refunds are available after the deadline where replacement crew can not be found. The organisers will find replecements when there is a waiting list. Insurance terms
As usual the skippers will be required to leave a cheque or credit card number with the charter company when taking the boat over. This is ca.£2000 to cover the cost of Insurance Excess in the event of the boat being damaged enough to make an insurance claim. Again the skipper should ensure that this is covered between the crew if it is invoked. The insurance details are available to each skipper from the Sunsail booking form and the crew advised prior to the event.
Kip Marina.
Pontoon space has been reserved for us, fees are covered in the weekend price.
The Saturday night venue is the Chartroom. Note, there are shore-based showering facilities.
Evenings Entertainments
The fun starts at 19:30, with a Buffet, followed by a short prize giving, and then a disco(and possibly a band) until close. Don't forget your dancing shoes. Please note a Dress theme is an event requirement for each boat this year. Any boat without a dress theme (in the view of the organisers) will have 20mins added to their race time.There will be a prize for the best.
Boat Presentations
- as usual no-one should go home empty handed. Each boat will be required to provide a prize - of a low value (£10) - suitable for another boat. The rotation of presentations and which boat will present to which will be decided by finishing order. Be prepared to have a prize ready, and you must tell all the other crews why this prize should be valued by the receiving crew - this can be a song, verse, poem, or just a plain old verbal explanation. Get the thinking caps on, ......but keep it very short, please!!!
The 'Race'
The race(s)this year will take place in the Firth of Clyde. Start time will be ca. 1000 with the aim of finishing the race(s) by 1730. Each boat is expected to complete one successful man overboard exercise under sail prior to starting the race. Race details will be provided at the Skipper's briefing on Saturday morning at 0815 in the Largs Sailing Club briefing room and will be organised by Sunsail this year who will also provide the committee boat.
Sunday
Every boat is free to wake up, have breakfast and sail back to Largs. This is just 8NM so there will be plenty of time to visit say Rothsay, the Cumbraes or even the Kyles of Bute, if you get up early (aye right!). Any boats wishing to race the return leg can arrange this on the Saturday night. Sunsail can help with this. The boats should be back around 17.00 hours in Largs.
